Looking forward to 2011

We have just finished the big push of getting Wedding albums out to people, and although we have a few more to ship - we are passed the hump.

I'm now turning my attention to 2011, and a series of workshops I'm planning.

Yes, we are going back to Panama again. PPW (Panama Photographic Workshops has invited me back again for the weekend of Feb 28, 2011. You can't beat the rate at $300 for the weekend, plus it will be warm, which on this 29 degree morning in New England is pretty appealing.

I'm heading to Northeast Pennsylvania in May, and we've started talking to some PPA folks about other events.

Locally, we've got some Workflow workshops planned for New England.

I'll keep you posted as things develop.

Model session with Kate on White

Kate, who is an aspiring model. Could work, 5'10" without the heels. Smart too. headed to Law school next year, and watch out, she's also a blackbelt in Karate.

Anyway, she was in the studio this week, and we did a lot of work on the white background. I see this technique done poorly quite a bit. Poorly in that the white doesn't always look white, but grayish.

So here is a quick lesson. Get a roll of Arctic White background paper. Annie Leibovitz did this with bedroom sheets in the 70's when she hit the road with the Rolling Stones, and others. Anyway, you then need ideally two, but you can do it with one speedlight. two is better. Have them each pointed at the background, set to manual power and trigger them with a Pocket Wizard or similar slave unit. I set mine at 1/2 power, but you'll need to experiment, and might need full power on both. Then test exposure using your DSLR. You want that light at about f 11 at ISO. Then you have your third speed light in an umbrella facing your subject, and you want that hit the subject around f 5.6. In other words, you want about 2 stops between the subject and the background, so that your background blows out completely. Now you camera is set for 5.6.

I did these shots with two Canon 580 ex speedlights on the background, and a studio Alien Bee with a Beauty Dish on the subject.

I love this technique. If you look at a lot of women's magazines you'll see tons and tons of photographs on white.

I'm just back from Panama and a great time with Tito and Jamie and all the folks at the Panama Photographic Workshops. From creative lighting to creative marketing, this workshop designed for beginning to intermediate wedding photographers will help participants learn the essential tools to wedding photography. The morning session introduces concepts of marketing, pricing and the business of wedding photography. Yes! You read that correctly. I've been invited to teach a Wedding & Portrait workshop in Panama. My Hosts will be Jamie & Tito Herrerra of Panama Photo Workshops. We are scheduled for March 19, 20 & 21. So if you want a break from the cold of winter, join me on the flight down. Lisa and I will go a week early to check out what I'm told is a fantastic country, and one of the most Cosmopolitan cities in Latin America.

Nothing else is scheduled for the winter, as I'm taking off the winter months for some personal travel and renewal.

But, we'll do some local workshops in the Spring in Rhode Island.

Another great group of photographers on November 7 in Lincoln, RI with the Southern New England Portrait Group. We spent the morning covering the foundational and technical aspects of lighting. The afternoon and early evening we had a great time with our models Bill, Casha and Rachel.

Right now the next scheduled workshop is going to be in Panama City, Panama, Central America on March 21 & 22, 2010. if you are interested in making a vacation and flying down to join us for this unique event, contact me and I'll get you the info.

I'm taking the winter off and plan to be traveling across the Southern US to work on a personal project..

Next Spring we'll put together some events in Rhode Island, and maybe something in the New York area.

Basically, we are learning how to use small strobes such as aCanon 580 ex or nikon SB-800 with pocketwizards. How to use off-camera lighting.

Dance Troupe

The hartford Modern Dance Troupe asked me to help create some images for their print and web publicity. We went to the Beach at harkness Memorial State Park, and had a great time.

Most of these were shot with the Canon 5D II and a 16-35mm lens. I put a Q-Flash inside a huge 60inch umbrella.

Here I want to show two images of lovely Lealyn. Alot of you know this already, but just a reminder that you can effect the look of a photo by adjusting your shutter speed. The dark background is from 1/200 of a second, the lighter background was taken at 1/80 of a second, which allows more time for more of the available light to enter the photo.

Then there is brad Smith's great image of Kate holding the surfboard. I'm 99.9% sure that was all available light. Which he could do, because of the thick fog we had that day, that created this giant softbox.

I'm scheduling a sunset workshop in Narragansett, Rhode Island for Wednesday July 29 6:00 p.m.

I've secured one model so far, Lleylan. She was actually a model in Joe McNally's recent book. I'm hoping to schedule another model soon.

Cost of this workshop will be the cost of the models divided by the number of photogs. Approximately $25-$50. We'll also keep a max of 4 photogs to model ratio.

We had a gorgeous 70 degree day here in Rhode island, for our workshop on Creative Lighting. 18 photographers, a full house, and 4 great photographers. I had to turn people away. What a great problem.

I hope people send me there favorites from their own cameras, cause I really didn't get a chance to shoot very much. But here is a quick sampling.

All the details are secure, and we are ready to have you sign up. See info below to sign up.

Format: This is not a lecture or workshop, this is a mutual learning opportunity. The assumption is we all need to learn from each other, and if everyone comes with this attitude, it will be great. At the bottom of this email, I've included suggestions from previous strobist meet ups. If you are not familiar with Strobist go here www.strobist.com

I will set up a system for all the photographers to work together in small groups, just to get things organize. This will be fluid, and you can of course move in and out of groups. We'll have three models, maybe a fourth if we get more photographers. This way we won't all be crowding around one set up.

Equipment: Bring your gear. Most important is when you register tell me what kind of lighting gear you'll be bringing. This way we can organize in advance, and minimize a lot of hassle at the beginning of the day. I especially need to know if you are bringing Pocket Wizards, umbrellas, Softbox, Strobes. Or if you are bringing nothing. I do NOT need to know what camera or lens you will bring.

Models: I have three Models, Cynthia, MacKenzie & Damien. Photos on the Blog. . I've worked with them before, they are not professional models, but have a knack for modeling and a fair amount of experience.

Use of Images: First off, all the models want images for their portfolio, so part of your agreement in participating is to get them some of your best images. Please plan on following through with this. You can use images for your websites and publicity, but selling images, well you need to negotiate that with the models afterward.

Costs & Sign up: I'm limiting this to a max of 12 photographers. Why, cause the space will allow us, plus models enough room to move around, but not get in each others way too much. The cost is $45, which covers the rental of the space and the cost of the models.

Food: I'm not in charge of food or drink. You are. Bring your own, or there is a McDonalds across the street. Yummmmmmm. No alcohol, as our contract with Firehouse does not allow alcohol. We can go out afterwards if you wish - for a meal and a laughs.

I just confirmed with Damien. He'll be our third model. He's an medical student preparing to be a doctor, does Tae Kwon Doe, so we should get some cool action photos. Jumping etc.

Details of the Jan 1 Meetup

Time: 3 p.m. til 8 p.m.
Date: Jan 1 2009
Location: Firehouse 13. in Providence, RI www.firehouse13.org

Cost: $45 includes Rental of facility, models and learning and fun.

What is it? We call it a Meetup. We gather a bunch of photographers with various levels of ability, and we set up three or four sets with a model in each set. We are experimenting with lighting. Models can practice poses etc. The idea is we are learning together.

We take the total cost of everything. Rental of place, model fees and divide it among the photogs. So no one is making money, it's a learning/practicing event.

Space is limited to no more than 12 Photographers. We need at least 6 photographers to make this a go. So you must register with me. Email me at jimhazelwood@mac.com to register and get more info.

What to bring: Camera & Lens, Pocketwizards, portable strobe, umbrellas, softbox. You don't need all this stuff, but we'll need enough to share. I'll compile a list once we get the registrants.
