A great workshop Yesterday at the proctor mansion Inn. We are now gearing up for our next event on June 14 in Providence, RI.

I was so busy teaching and helping students, that I did not get a chance to shoot much, yesterday. But, here is a favorite that I did get. (Click to enlarge.) More to come from participants in the form of a slideshow.

New Sponsor for our wedding workshops - iFolios

Today we got a new sponsor for all of our workshops, iFolios. And this is very cool.

Why?

What iFolios does, for an incredibly reasonable price, is to enable your website to be seen on mobile phones, like the iphone of itouch. Most websites are not geared for mobile accessing of websites. Soooooo, your website takes forever to load, and your clients, say forget this and move on. iFolio essentially detects that a mobile devise is accessing your web page, and then jumps in with a mobile friendly web site.

Check em out at http://ifolios.mobi/

As soon as I'm done with this post I'm submitting my site for this very cool app.

Now we'll be giving away a free subscription at all of our workshops.

By the way, we'll give away one to the first person that signs up for our June 14th workshop. Just send me an email, and the first one with a paid registration for June 14th, wins. jimhazelwood [at] mac.com

Model session with Kate on White

Kate, who is an aspiring model. Could work, 5'10" without the heels. Smart too. headed to Law school next year, and watch out, she's also a blackbelt in Karate.

Anyway, she was in the studio this week, and we did a lot of work on the white background. I see this technique done poorly quite a bit. Poorly in that the white doesn't always look white, but grayish.

So here is a quick lesson. Get a roll of Arctic White background paper. Annie Leibovitz did this with bedroom sheets in the 70's when she hit the road with the Rolling Stones, and others. Anyway, you then need ideally two, but you can do it with one speedlight. two is better. Have them each pointed at the background, set to manual power and trigger them with a Pocket Wizard or similar slave unit. I set mine at 1/2 power, but you'll need to experiment, and might need full power on both. Then test exposure using your DSLR. You want that light at about f 11 at ISO. Then you have your third speed light in an umbrella facing your subject, and you want that hit the subject around f 5.6. In other words, you want about 2 stops between the subject and the background, so that your background blows out completely. Now you camera is set for 5.6.

I did these shots with two Canon 580 ex speedlights on the background, and a studio Alien Bee with a Beauty Dish on the subject.

I love this technique. If you look at a lot of women's magazines you'll see tons and tons of photographs on white.

Email with questions or post comments.

We're featured on the PPW site

Yup that's me photographing Lorena using the available light technique made famous by, well, just about every artist going back to Rembrandt and beyond. This is the masthead for the Panama Photographic Workshops. We are going back next year in late february. If you are in Panama, hope to see you again. Proximo ano! If you are in the States, consider a trip down. A great workshop for a great price, plus you can get warm for a week while the ice age hits the north.
